The following data refer to a two-cylinder locomotive with crank at 900: Reciprocating mass per cylinder = 300 kg

         Crank radius       = 30 cm

Diameter of the driving wheels = 180 cm

Distance between the cylinder central lines = 65 cm

Distance between the driving wheel centre planes = 155 cm

         Determine

(a)  the fraction of the reciprocating masses to be balanced by placing the balancing masses on the driving wheels, if the hammer blow is not to exceed 4600 kgf at 96.5 km/hr, and

(b)  The variation in tractive effort.
