An ideal Diesel engine operates with air as the working substance. The temperature and pressure of the air at the beginning of the compression process are 25°C and 1.005 bar. The compression ratio is 18 and the cut-off occurs at 6.5% of the expansion stroke.

(i)    Draw the p-V and the T-s diagrams for the cycle indicating clearly each of the processes:

(ii)   Determine the pressure and temperature at the end of each process;

(iii)  Determine the air-standard efficiency of the cycle assuming g = 1.4 for air;

(iv)  The work done per cycle (assume
CP = 1 kJ/kg.K);

(v)   The mean effective pressure.
