The stiffness of a close – coiled spring is such that it deflects 36mm when an axial force of 10 N is applied on the end of the hook.

(i)   Calculate the mass to be hung on the hook so that, when set vibrating, it will make one complete oscillation per/sec . The mass of the spring is 0.6 kg and the effect of this when vibrating is to be taken as equivalent to a mass on the end of the hook equal to the one third of the mass of the spring.

(ii)  Calculate also the maximum velocity and

(iii) Maximum acceleration of the vibrating mass when initially displaced 12mm from the position of equilibrium

(iv) What is the natural frequency of a vibrating system?
