The proportions of a common rivet and the guide lines for designing a single riveted lap joint are given:

where = thickness of plates joined, mm

d = diameter of rivet shank, mm

p = pitch of rivets, mm

m = margin, mm (distance between an edge of the plate and the nearest hole of rivet)

Bring out on what design basis” these proportions and guidelines are suggested.
